The following conditions have an increased risk of requiring a transfusion:
- individuals on anticoagulants
- chronic use of aspirin
- chronic use of anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., ibuprofen)
- medical conditions that predispose to bleeding (e.g., ulcers)
- any condition that may require emergency surgery (e.g., cardiac disease, gastrointestinal disease, and bone fractures)
