The first step in our donor program requires you to answer a questionnaire, which includes your medical, genetic, and sexual history, completely and honestly.  Your interviewer will review with you any question you do not understand. 

A semen sample is then produced by masturbation in a private room.  A lab technician will analyze the specimen, checking the sperm count and sperm movement while noting the presence of extracellular debris.  The semen is then frozen, thawed, and re-analyzed to check the cryosurvival rate.

If your first specimen yields satisfactory results (as decided by New York State and American Association of Tissue Banks guidelines), you will be asked to return for rescreening. The rescreening process is necessary to check the consistency of your specimens.  After two or more rescreenings, blood and urine samples will be taken for various tests (usually on the day of your third donation).  In addition, a physical examination and consultation with a physician is required.  You will be examined by one of the doctors here, who is affiliated with IDANT. If all results are normal, you will be issued a donor code number and may begin donating on a regular basis. You will be compensated $60.00 for the second and third screenings.

Compensation

Donors accepted into our program are compensated $60.00 for each acceptable specimen.  Compensation for each donation is made as follows:  (1)  $40.00 per "acceptable" specimen.  A check will be issued the first of the month for all acceptable specimens donated the previous month. (2)  $20.00 per "acceptable" specimen released after 180 days of  quarantine.  A check will be issued for those specimens donated 180 days prior to the latest non-reactive HIV-1, HIV-2, HCV (Hepatitis C), HTLV-I antibody screens, Hepatitis B antigen and core antibody screen, and syphilis test and unless normal ALT values are determined.  In other words, each specimen is held in storage and can only be used 180 days after the donation is made providing the donor tests negative for HIV-1, HIV-2, HCV, HTLV-I, HbsAg, HbcAb, and RPR  and for acceptable ALT values.  Thus, specimens are released each time your blood is drawn and tests negative for HIV-1, HIV-2, HCV, HTLV-I, HbsAg, HbcAb, and RPR and for acceptable ALT values.  Blood is drawn every three months.

We encouraged donors to refer their friends to our donor program.  If your referral is ultimately accepted into our donor program, you are paid an additional $100.
