ANDROLOGY AND LABORATORY SERVICES

Andrology Services

1. Complete semen analysis including volume, liquefaction, viscosity, pH, concentration, morphology, motility, forward progression, and evaluation of extracellular artifacts.

Semen Variables Normal Range
Volume > 2.0 ml
Liquefaction Complete within one hour
pH 7.2-8.0
Concentration > 20 M/ml
Morphology 30% or more with normal forms (WHO) / 14% by Strict Criteria
Motility > 50%
Forward progression > 2
Debris None-Slight
Epithelial cells None-Few
Erythrocytes None
Round cells < 1.0 M/ml
White blood cells < 1.0 M/ml

2. Viability assessment: usually employed in situations of sperm immobility. There are some instances when immotile sperm cells are actually viable. A viability stain can determine if the sperm is alive or not. Viable sperm exclude the stain, while dead sperm take in the stain.

3. Peroxidase stain: used to determine the concentration of white blood cells in the semen sample. The presence of white blood cells in a semen sample (i.e., pyospermia) may indicate the presence of an infection in the reproductive tract.

4. Quantitative fructose test: detects the presence of fructose in semen. Fructose is a marker for seminal vesicle function, and is present in semen except when the ejaculatory ducts are obstructed or congenitally absent.

5. Sperm washing: includes the double-wash, swim-up, gradient-medium, and retrograde methods.

Fertility Testing (Blood Tests)

1. Fertility Profile 1: includes T4, FSH, LH, Estradiol, and TSH.

2. Fertility Profile 2: includes Estradiol and Prolactin.
